LAYCETAL™

LAYCETAL™

Description

LAYCETAL™ redefines precision performance with the strength of Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as Acetal. This advanced polymer offers metal-like rigidity with lightweight efficiency, thanks to its semi-crystalline structure. It excels in wear resistance, low-friction movement, and dimensional stability under stress. Ideal for motion-intensive and tight-tolerance applications, LAYCETAL™ delivers reliable performance in gears, moving parts, and structural components. Available in unfilled, reinforced, and lubricated grades, it seamlessly adapts to diverse needs across automotive, industrial, and appliance sectors.

Engineering Insight

POM’s unique polymer structure features high crystallinity, which provides exceptional dimensional precision, even under cyclic mechanical loads and thermal variation. Its low coefficient of friction and high surface hardness make it suitable for low-lubrication or dry-running components. Additionally, POM demonstrates excellent creep resistance, maintaining its shape and function over time, especially in load-bearing or moving assemblies. These properties allow LAYCETAL™ to perform reliably in mechanical systems where smooth motion, wear resistance, and thermal stability are essential.

Product Properties

Polyoxymethylene (POM), also known as Acetal, is an engineering thermoplastic produced through the polymerization of formaldehyde or its derivative, trioxane. In the case of homopolymer POM, formaldehyde is generated by oxidizing methanol, then polymerized using anionic catalysts after purification through cold traps. For copolymer POM, trioxane is synthesized and copolymerized with small amounts of comonomers like ethylene oxide, enhancing thermal and chemical stability. The result is a high-strength, low-friction polymer with excellent dimensional stability, widely used as a metal replacement in precision components across automotive, industrial, and electronic applications.
